| The topography of the Durban Metropolitan Area (DMA) is characterized
by rolling hills in the west that give way to relatively flat coastal plains
in the east. There are nine rivers that flow through the DMA and empty into
the Indian Ocean along the coastline that is the eastern boundary of the
metropolitan area. These rivers, many of which originate in the Drakensberg
Mountains to the west, and the local water systems that feed into them,
are responsible for the many gorges and river valleys that exist within
the city's municipal boundaries. |
