Chawls

Chawls were multi-storied one room tenements created for the working class and police officers. By building thes chawls, Mumbai was able to house the majority of its urban poor and through the 1950s they were able to keep down the number of squatter settlements. Unfortunately that changed with the population expolsion in the 1960s.
