The British Presidency Towns were the more developed trade/port
cities which were the main focus of the empire's rule and
have developed Western-style central business districts and many
other western amenities. Almost all of them started out with forts at the
center and followed the pattern of colonial cities. Many of the old Presidency
Towns are still the most important towns in their countries and focus as
much on internal trade as on foreign trade, profiting from both.
