 Belfast and its Model

Click on a region of the model to see how it applies to Belfast.

The model of the West European city can be used to describe Belfast, although some modifications must be taken into account. Rather than an emphasis on social status as influencing the urban pattern, in Belfast it is mainly ethnic division, creating a predominantly Catholic West and Protestant East. Additionally, socioeconomic levels vary greatly between Catholics and Protestants; the former are the majority of inner city residents extending into the west and part of the north while the latter are more likely to live in the suburbs east and south of the city.
