Belfast's transportation system is one of buses and black taxis. The bus system runs mainly along the spine roads leading from the city center outward. While the system is fairly complex, accessibility is a problem for residents whose movement is restricted by peacelines. The bus company, Translink, has implemented several new services including Centrelink, a system serving mainly tourists, connecting with transportation depots, shopping, entertainment, and new amenities. The famous double-decker buses of England have been removed from Belfast's streets since the beginning of the Troubles due to the prevalence of attacks in the secluded upper level.
Private cars are becoming a problem in the city, traffic is heavy in the morning, evening, and even at lunch. Parking facilities are inadequate for the number of commuters from the suburbs and the city streets are always busy. |
