| Belfast is surrounded by several smaller towns within its commuting area. As the urban area grows, these towns are often incorporated into the city region, though they may remain amenity locations as is the case of Bangor, a small waterfront town east of the city. Planners are encouraging movement into these towns rather than to scattered rural locations in an effort to preserve the greenbelt surrounding the city. |
