Introduction to Florence

Florence, Italy is most famous for the art and the artists of the Italian Renaissance, but the city is also an important economic center of Italy and the political center of Tuscany. The city was the original capitol of the unified Italy in 1859, and as early as the 11th century was an important banking city in Italy and later Europe. It was also home to the poet Dante and to political philosopher Machiavelli. Florence has always been a large producer of textiles, and in the 19th century it was also an important center of literature. Today, Florence is home to some the most famous art and architecture in the world including the Renaissance architecture of Brunelleschi, Giotto, Alberti, Sangallo, and Ammannati; the sculptures of Pisano, Donatello, and Cellini; and the paintings of Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci.
