Central Business District
![]()
Santiago’s central business district is truly the heart of the city and its outlying suburbs. With over 1.8 million people commuting into the city on a daily basis, Santiago proper, with a population of only 230,000, sees an almost eight fold increase in its population each day. Although the whole of the city of Santiago could be considered an extended CBD, the real action lies in the district bordered by Cerro Santa Lucia, the Alameda Bernardo O’Higgins, Avenida Matucana, and the Mapocho River (the borders in the above picture). Government offices and the presidential palace, La Moneda, are located on the Plaza de Armas in the center of the CBD. The CBD is the home to the majority of jobs in greater Santiago, as well as the premiere shopping district. This small district is also home to many recreational spaces, including art galleries, museums, clubs, and parks. At night, there are bars and after hours clubs to keep one entertained.
Subway system map
Santiaguinos commute into the city in cars, by bus, or on one of the three subway lines. The subway system is well used, but seems underdeveloped for the number of commuters who come into the city daily. It would be beneficial to the city’s smog problem if train usage could be further increased.
