Modern Helsinki
A general map of Helsinki (click for a larger version)
Helsinki today is expanding rapidly, driven by a powerful economy and a young, intelligent workforce.
The city boasts a high standard of living in most respects, due to its parks and public transit system, as
well as the magnificent center city, with its cultural opportunities. Urban sprawl is a big problem however; there
is no room to expand in the center city and housing is hard to find. The suburbs are growing rapidly because
of this and because of the outmigration of factories to industrial parks on the outskirts of the city. This does not
seem to bother people as much as it might in the US. Helsinki's strong central government probably plays a role
in this, because expansion is generally well planned by US standards, and is considered inevitable at some level.
The city's status as the centerpiece of Finnish urban structure has become almost self supporting at this point.
Much of the nation's wealth is concentrated in Helsinki, and this causes in-migration, in turn causing more growth
and wealth production, as well as urban sprawl. For better or worse, Helsinki will continue to grow for the
foreseeable future.
