Close analysis of this picture reveals several important things about Helsinki. Its association with water is
immediately obvious, as well as how separated the city is because of its bays, lakes, and rivers. The cranes of the
industrial harbor are visible in the distance. The urban sprawl that is occurring in modern times is also obvious,
looking at the horizon. Comparing the left and the right of the picture, the tension between the older style imperial
architecture and the more modern post-war concrete buildings is clear. This concrete building also is indicative
of how skyscrapers seem to be eschewed by the citizens of Helsinki, perhaps because there is room for expansion
in the hinterland.
