Surviving Grid System of Beirut

The grid pattern of Beirut's central business district dates back to about 600 A.D.E. when Beirut fell under Muslim Control. Beirut became a fortified city with an internal structure of narrow, maze-like streets. The grid pattern, still visible in Beirut, gives "the central business district an ancient feel" and makes construction extremely difficult.
