 Culture and Entertainment.

South Australia's license plates proudly proclaim that SA is the Festival State, and as the capital and primate city, Adelaide is by extension the Festival City. The huge Festival Center (pictured to the right) just north of the CBD provides space for not only state- and nation-wide festivals, but also has numerous theaters and other venues. The Adelaide Casino provides a swanky place to go on weekends, and features some archaic Australian gambling games.

Adelaide also has a thriving inner-city culture; the CBD is where everyone goes on weekend nights to enjoy the "see and be seen" atmosphere on Rundle Mall or one of the other club- and restaurant-lined streets downtown. Since the postwar wave of immigration, Adelaide also boasts some excellent ethnic dining, especially Southeast Asian, Italian, and Greek cuisine. They also have the Italians to thank for importing a bustling cafe culture to Adelaide. The parklands that surround the city provide a cheaper form of entertainment, and many bike and walking paths make it easy to enjoy the wonderful climate and beautiful surroundings of Adelaide.

Adelaide's environs also provide a great deal of enjoyment to tourists and locals alike. The ocean and many beaches are easily accessible by tram, bike, or car; however, it is the Southern Ocean and not too far from Antarctica, so it's a chilly swim. In the other direction, the Adelaide Hills offer numerous preserves and parks for hiking. Further beyond, excursions to the wineries and small towns in the Barossa Valley are incredibly popular; whale-watching or penguin photography at Victor Harbor to the south are only a few hours away, and the Flinders Ranges, past the Lofties to the north, offer beautiful hiking and camping opportunities for those tired of the city.
