Certain Planning Initiatives

Very few cities in the world can match up to the lively and active interest the citizenry and government have in the city planning of Tokyo. Their aim is to decentralize the core Tokyo region by building several new towns and satellite areas that will augment Tokyo's position on the international arena. Furthermore they plan to revitalize the Tokyo downtown and cater it to foreign companies and their employees. The internationalization of Tokyo through a multi-nodal development program is the core of urban plans for the city.

Recently the most effective urban plan for the Tokyo Metropolis is the '2nd long term plan' which is the brainchild of the administration of Governor Suzuki Shunichi. This plan was released in November of 1986 and aims at striking an immediate balance for the needs of Tokyoites and the need to bolster Tokyo as an economic powerhouse. The plan wishes to make Tokyo as a city of workplace and residence (improving urban life), whilst continuing on the trend to attract foreign businesses and multi-nodal growth.

The planners aim at creating several sub-centers for the Tokyo-to region leading to de-congestion and efficient individual "sub-cities." The planners have also anticipated the migration of companies from Hong Kong post-1997, due to the Chinese takeover; they have created the new towns so as to reduce congestion to facilitate the relocation of foreign companies in the Tokyo Metropolitan area.

If one looks closely, one can see different type of towns planned

An internal model of one of these "sub-cities." One can see that the different shadings indicate residential, industrial, commercial and transport routes; showing the self sufficiency of these towns.

Several new towns like this one (Tama Town) have better planning and recreation facilities, such as wider boulevards and beach facilties
