Historic
Preservation
Due to the destruction of Tokyo several
times caused due to fires and earthquakes and a thorough make-over by the
real estate industry there stands very little historic architecture in
the urban fabric of Tokyo. The city is predominantly new, with many of
the old buildings and neighbourhoods dating back to only 1923, the year
after the earthquake. But a significant number of old historic sites still
stand within the framework of the city and have been preserved with great
reverence. This includes sections of the Edo Castle, several prominent
temples from the Edo dynasty and various Meiji buildings and the Tokyo
Railway station. Some old neighbourhoods have also been preserved with their
housing structures and old shops, whereby the Tokyo government itself is
promoting to maintain a historic ambience of certain districts.
