Jamaica's imports were US$3,127.8 million in 1997; US$3,029.4 million in 1998 and US$2,903.7 in 1999.

Imports of Consumer Goods in 1997 was US$895.1 million; US$928.7 million in 1998 and US$963.5 million in 1999.

Capital Goods imports in 1997 was US$659.5 million; US$ 567.5 million in 1998 and US$469.3 million in 1999.

Total exports was US$1,354.6 million in 1997; US$1,265.9 million in 1998 and US$1,212.8 million in 1999.

Bauxite and alumina accounted for 52 per cent of total exports in 1997, 51 per cent in 1998 and 55 per cent in 1999.

11,987 million tonnes of bauxite were mined in 1997; 12,675 million tonnes in 1998 and 11,699 million tonnes in 1999.

In October 1999, the unemployment rate was 15.6 per cent – 10.2% among males and 22.4 per cent among females.

The labour force accounted for 48.5 per cent of the population in October 1999 and for 48.3 per cent in October 2000.

The inflation rate was 9.2 per cent for 1997; 7.9 per cent for 1998; 6.8 per cent for 1999 and

6.1 per cent for 2000.
