Cape Flats
There are six townships making up the Cape Flats. They are: Guguletu, Nyanga, Philippi, Mitchell's Plain, Crossroads and Khayelitsha. Most blacks live either in hostels or in shacks in the vast squatter camps. However, unlike the hostels in Johannesburg, which were cut off from the life of the surrounding township and became armed camps, hostels in Cape Town are integrated with the community. Some are owned by the city council, others by large companies such as Coca Cola.
Each unit is home to 16 families; each room contains three families. Some of the residents have moved out of the hostels and built shacks, but the hostels remain the source of electricity, water and sanitation.
All the black townships except Khayelitsha have hostels. Khayelitsha, witha population of one million, consequently has a huge proportion of squatters.
