Temperatures
The warmest months of the year are December, January and February. June, July and August are colder months.
Summer temperatures average 75 degrees F with a maximum of 100 degrees F. Average winter temperatures are 55 degrees F.
Precipitation
The average rainfall in the city is 21 inches spread over some 105 days of the year. During the summer, Cape Town experiences little rain, long days, rarely excessive heat and clear skies.
In nearby residential suburbs on the south-east side of Table Mountain, the average rainfall can reach 62 inches.
Cape Town is a non-frost area, but during the winter there are times when frost is noticed at the top of Table Mountain.
Air Currents
Prevailing north-west winds usually bring rain for several days at a time to the Cape. During summers, Cape Town experiences "south easters" where winds blow from the south-east often reaching a force well in advance of 60 miles per hour for several days. This phenomenon is also known as the Cape Doctor.
In General
Cape Town has what is described as a Mediterranean climate. There are no terrible extremes of temperature, although it can be relatively cold and wet for a few months over winter.
