Introduction

The city of Tel Aviv began as a suburb of the neighboring Jaffa (Yafo), an ancient city. The original idea was to create a "Garden City" away from the city of Jaffa for Jewish residents. Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 and Israel became an independent state in 1948, so the city has seen drastic changes over the years. The current location and size of the Tel Aviv-Jaffa area has been formed by a number of factors. Most importantly, immigration into Israel has been concentrated in the Tel-Aviv conurbation in the past 100 years, explaining much of the structure of the city.
