Slums and Unauthorized Colonies

Delhi, the fourth largest city slum ridden city, has a widespread distribution. Pockets of high concentration occur at two major places. One is located along a national highway running southeast from India Gate of New Delhi. The second is located to the east of Connaught Place. These pockets are not the only areas of distribution in the city. Modern maps show distribution to be found in significant numbers throughout Delhi. The DDA has attempted relocation programs. However, they have failed because DDA built tenement housing far removed from places of employment.

One third of Delhi's population live in slums.

They are:

• construction workers
• sweepers
• factory workers
• low income people

Detriments to safety, health, and morals:	high infant mortality
	disease such as small pox and cholera
	little or no health care facilities
	improper or non-existent sewege schemes
	little or no basic facilities such as water and electricity
