New Delhi:

Colonial Capital City

Historically. . .  New Delhi was declared capital of British India in 1911. Sir Edwin Lutyens, an English architect, was chosen to create a colonial city to the south of Old Delhi. The result of early planning was a commercial area to the north and a residential area to the south of Central Vista Park, the center of administration.
Characteristically. . .  An imperialistic style has dominated New Delhi. Spacious landscape with wide roads, trees and gardens decorate the garden city. Mughal style is a mere whisper emerging from the landscape through traditional red brick, domes atop Lutyens's British structures, and mughal gardens behind the Presidential House.

Connaught Place. . . of northern New Delhi, is a western style shopping center that is very different from the traditional markets of the old city. The layout of the commercial district is two circle roads surrounding a park. This area has become Delhi's main location of shopping and entertainment. Major roads radiate south from Connaught Place towards Central Vista Park.
Central Vista Park. . . is the location most of the administrative, financial, and office buildings of Delhi. The pinnacle of Central Vista Park is Raisina Hill where the Presidential House and two secretariat buildings stand. At the base of the hill are legislative buildings and Raj Path, a road which extends through Central Vista Park to India Gate.
Residential Colonies. . .of affluency are among the triangular patterns of roads south of Central Vista Park. The homes here are much different from the homes of slum colonies or in traditional Old Delhi. Development of suburban Delhi has occurred through the area south of Central Vista Park and the result has been a mix of shopping areas, contemporary homes, and historical places such as Lodi Garden, Humayun's Tomb, and the Qutab Minar Complex. This area also reveals western influence as seen in Delhi Golf Course, Gymkhana Sports Club, and a racecourse.
