CASTLEFIELD TODAY

Castlefield has experienced a period of decline in this century, following the fall in popularity of canal and rail based transport. The area now lies on the fringe of the regional center, full of ties to the past and yet changing with new developments. With the cleaning out of the last slums in the 1960's, the area has experienced a rebirth as a residential area as part of the City Council's policy to bring residents back to the City Center. Both Central Station, and the Liverpool Road Goods Station closed during the 1960's, and now most of those sites are publicly owned. The Castlefield area was designated as a Conservation Area in 1979, particularly for it's historic connections with transportation.
