The recall of the Roman troops c.400 C.E., lead to the collapse of Mamucium for 500 years, until it is recorded in 919 C.E., Edward the Elder sent in forces to man Manchester. At this time the center moved from Castlefield to Hunts Bank (called Mameceaster), leaving a small hamlet to develop called Ald-port or old town, at the site of the fort. As trade developed, helped by the development of transportation in the Castlefield area, the growth of Manchester from a medieval village to a Georgian town took place. In the 1720's, navigation to Liverpool became possible through the navigation from the River Irwell to the River Mersey, further expanding Manchester's trade and growth. Toward the end of the Georgian period, the Castlefield area was further enhanced by the building of St. George's Church and St. Matthew's Church, to service the new military barracks and the growing residential area.
