San Juan, Puerto Rico

 GO TO MAPS

This map is a bit touristy, but it gives a good overall perspective of the San Juan region.
San Juan was set up as a Spanish colonial outpost (and military base) in 1521. The original city center is located on the tip of an islet that creates the northern boundary of San Juan harbor. The original center of the city, because of physical boundaries to growth, is now located in the northwest 'corner' of the city. The modern commercial core is on the mainland north of the canal, east of the Isla Grande airport, and west of the lagoon. With the exception of the Caribbean Map, Puerto Rico maps, and the map to the left, all maps were drawn by Sara Sommarstrom from various sources--other maps, historical accounts, Census Information, and photographs.
