  • 80,000 immigrants from 169 countries in 1997
  • 48% of the population are immigrants.
  • Over 80 languages are spoken
  • 1/3 of the citizens speak non-English at home.

Toronto is a multicultural city with immigrants from
various ethnic backgrounds. The Chinese, particularly
immigrants from Hong Kong, are the major ethnic
group in Toronto. It is even suggested that Chinese
be an official language of Canada in addition to
    French and English.

    Official Languages: English & French

One thing that struck me, throughout my trip to Toronto,
was the thoroughly organized bilingual society. As you
may know, the Canadian government, by the official language
act, designates English and French as official languages
as a result of its historical development process. No matter
where you go, when you see official signs and documents,
almost everything is thoroughly written in French and English.
Albeit many of the residents speak English, as opposed to
the areas such Montreal and Quebec, the language act is
    comprehensively enforced.
