Cattedrale (Cathedral)

This site has been sacred throughout the history of Palermo, with Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs all having their place of worship here. As soon as the Normans concored the city in1072, they built a church on the site of the Arabian moque. The church was completely rebuilt in 1184 and consecrated as a cathedral. The apses are Norman, but the church has Catalan-Gothic additions. The Spanish gutted the interior in the 18th century and refurbished it in a neo-Classic style. Fredorick Stupor Mundi, his mother Constance, his grandfather Roger II, and his wife, Constance of Aragon are all buried in immense porphyry tombs within the Cathedral
