
On the other side of city hall from Fontania Pretoria is Piazza Bellini, where the churches of La Mortorana and San Cataldo stand side by side. The campanile of La Mortorana can be seen next to the three red domes of San Cataldo in the picture on the right. La Mortorana was founded in 1146 by Georgios Antiochenos, grand admiral of Roger II. It was htere the Sicilian Parliament met after the Sicilian Vespers. In 1588, much of the original Norman structure was demolished and replaced with Baroque (especially on the north-east and north-west sides. San Cataldo began in 1161, and is a mix of the Byzantine domes and Arabic styles of the time, complimenting La Mortorana nicely. See Picture below.
