Palermo has taken many steps in recent years to combat the problems of the city and renew the areas within the city that have been decaying since World War II. In one of their largest steps towards this goal, Palermo, (along with another 14 Italian cities) is now working with a European group named URBAN. Their mission is to help out cities with socio-economic uneasiness, by focusing on renewal of areas within the core of the city (usually with historical significance) that have suffered deterioration. Urban Palermo has chosen the quarter of Castellammare-Tribunali (the area east of Via Maqueda, south of Cavour, and north of Lincoln) for renewal, and is instituting a five point plan in the districts
Measure 1: Support the enterprises, the commerce and the typical local handicraft
Measure 2: Formation and promotion of the occupation to local level (FSE)
Measure 3: Social services, health and public order
Measure 4: Infrastructures and atmosphere
Measure 5:Performance monitoring and dissemination of the result
These measures include many projects, including putting cast iron lamp posts throughout the area, having a summer Jazz festival, and modernizing the bus system. for a more complete explanation of what Urban Palermo is doing, click below (warning: this page is in Italian)
