Jabotabek 2003

A general model for major land use in the large Southeast Asian city by T.G. McGee:

As shown in the following maps, the McGee model for Southeast Asian cities is very close to the way in which Jakarta is structured. Although Jakarta has a dual core structure due to the two ports, the area based out of Tanjung Priok has virtually all of these qualities. The industrial zones surround the port and are touching the mixed land use zones. The government buildings are to the side of these structures and flanked by the high-class residential area of Merdeka Square and the CBD. The suburban areas such as Kabayoran and squatter villages surround all of this, and the agricultural areas surround the entire city.

This is a map of the Jakarta area in 1983:

This is a map of the Jakarta area in 1993, notice the new areas of suburban development on the outside of the pre-existing main urban area and the growth of the industry and commerce areas. Also notice the new nuclei forming around the surrounding settlements such as Bekasi, Bogor, and Tangerang to the west, south, and east respectively:

The following map shows the plan for Jabotabek in the year 2003. Jabotek stands for the areas of Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, and Bekasi. The new plans for the rapidly expanding cities include improving the infrastructure of a city that is growing too fast for the existing city systems. The government is working to improve water supply and disposal, health and sanitation, drainage, the kampungs in the inner city, rivers, roads, and economic growth. Notice how the cties of Tangerang, Jakarta, and Bekasi are planned to merge completely by 2003, yet the CBD and most industry will remain in the center of Jakarta. This means that a massive commuting population will arrive which will call for a huge improvement in the roads between the city centers.
