The transportation within the city is a surface network. Due to narrow streets in most of Shanghai, travel within the network is usually slow. Within this surface network there are two major modes of transportation in addition to pedestrian. These modes are bicycles and cars or motorized or non -motorized modes of transportation. Due to this mix use of space, traffic is further slowed down.

Due to this slow flow of traffic people usually do not want to use the primary form of public transportation, the bus. They are usually really crowded and slow due to the inefficient network. Shanghai has taken steps to increase the desirability of public transportation by adding a subway line.

In addition they have invested in major transportation projects such as the Elevated Inner Ring which connects the East and West side of Shanghai. The Yangpu and Nanpu bridges are part of the this and both of them allow traffic to cross the Huangpu River without using ferries.
