In order for Shanghai to improve its transportation system and reduce traffic congestion at all hours of the day, it must focus on improving its public transportation system along with its road network. It can improve its public transportation by finding a efficient transportation network that is fast and can carry a large volume of people. The systems that capable of this is mainly rail or subway systems such as the subway system in Hong Kong. Currently the main mode of public transportation is the bus which is overcrowded and slow. Shanghai is addressing this problem by
dedicate certain areas to certain type of traffic use such as motorized traffic versus non-motorized traffic. The one drawback to expanding the width of its streets is that in order to do so, the government would have to tear down buildings and existing infrastructure in order to make room for the expansion. Given the amount of housing space per person in Shanghai it would not be able to do this at a large scale without building new housing to replace the housing that would be torn down. By increasing the efficiency and the amount of traffic its transportation systems can handle it will increase the efficiency of the city in particular the efficiency of which goods can move.
