| Catalog Description, HS 101 and 102: | Pronunciation, grammar essentials, conversation and reading. Three class hours a week plus one hour of tutorial. Minimal introduction to history and culture of hispanophone countries. Prerequisites: for 101 there is no prerequisite. For admission into 102, students must have completed Hispanic Studies 101, or its equivalent, with a minimum grade of C-. Every semester. (4 credits, each course) | ||||||||||||
| Assumptions about the syllabus and course calendar: | Although each student will receive a hard copy of the syllabus, this will only be used for purposes of rough planning. The Course Calendar will change frequently and all students should consult the on-line version daily. The on-line Course Calendar is the only official schedule that we will follow for this course. Everything indicated on any given day is for that day. If an exam is indicated, the exam is on that day. If an exercise or Quia assignment is indicated, these must be completed prior to coming to class. Students are responsible for all assigned work, even though it will not all be covered in class. | ||||||||||||
| Attendance: | Attendance is required and monitored. More than 3 unexcused absences will lower the final grade. Likewise, late arrival to class, while allowed, will also be reflected in one's grade. | ||||||||||||
| Preparation and Participation: | Active and engaged participation is required, and for this to happen each student must be fully prepared for each class session. For example, one should be familiar with all assigned materials, including readings, vocabulary and points of grammar and usage. The degree to which one demonstrates careful preparation and participates actively, respectfully and effectively in the class and lab sessions will be reflected in the course grade. | ||||||||||||
| Missed and Late Assignments: | Exams, quizzes and other assignments are due on specified dates. Everyone will know well in advance when they are due and should plan accordingly. Missed exams may be rescheduled only under rare and unavoidable circumstances. Missed quizzes, Quia assignments and the like will not be accepted late. | ||||||||||||
| Evaluation: | The final grade is based on the following categories of work:
