The term project may take many different forms. In the course we study literature, music and film. We also study theoretical notions of translation and try to make some evaluative judgments of the effectiveness of the results of the translations, versions, interpretations, etc. that we encounter. We try our hand at the translation of several texts. And finally, we sample contemporary digital technology that enables relatively simple subtitling of visual materials. In light of these varied activities, many diverse approaches to the term project will suggest themselves to students. Topics may range from literary analysis, evaluation and/or comparison of translations, translation of texts, or even a digital subtitling project. In any case, the project will be chosen in consultation with the instructor prior to fall break. In essays I will look for the elements outlined in the Writing web page. In other types of projects I will look for criteria established in individual consultations. |
