"This government should not give away ships and planes, both because this weakens our first line of defense and because it is a big step towards participation in this war. If our government continues to furnish large numbers of warships, planes, tanks and weapons to Great Britain with which to kill Germans, it is inevitable that Germany will look upon America as an enemy and will feel justified in undertaking acts of sabotage in this country and in attacking our commerce. The parallel between the present time and 1916-1917 is complete. We believe that this country should immediately check the movement toward war which has been gaining in volume during the past few months."
- Clay Judson [Executive AFC member and prominent Chicago Attorney] to Robert E. Wood [AFC Chairman], September 24, 1940
