| Head Coach Ann Schley Rowers come from diverse backgrounds; body type and fitness may vary greatly. Regardless of this background, I believe it is best to start with technique: how the hand grips the blade, the body position at the catch. Instruction must come in a variety of forms, verbal—not just what to do, but how it feels to do it; visual--through videos and demonstrations; and tactilely--by being placed in the correct positions. Each rower is important, they will all learn at different rates, and individual goals will vary. This must be respected. I typically start the season with a questionnaire for each rower, asking for their goals, what other sports they participate in….This helps me to tailor the practices.
