About Mac Crew

The team returned from Madison, Wisconsin a week ago.  A bigger, and for us better regatta, though we still wish we could have done better.  The weather was cold and rainy, but that just builds character.  Kudos here must go out to the St. Cloud State's rowing team.  They trailered our boats for us, and it cannot be said enough how cool they were about it.

Just this past weekend, the men's varsity four scrimmaged with St. Thomas and the University of Minnesota.  Then the low dock got put in down at the MRC boat house, and several of our novices flipped singles.  The rest of us are worrying about exams.

The winter started off with promise for the team. Through the
amazingly generous donation of 4 concept 2 ergs, winter training was given a real boost. The Men's team practiced all winter long together, posting personal record erg scores.

Unfortunately, this season has been shortened to the point that our expectations are unfulfilled. Our traditional spring break training trip to Austin, TX was stopped by new school van rules that limit driving to 800 miles each way. Due to the absence of a coach, we were unable to race in our first planned regatta in spring, in Omaha. Our traditional end to the season, Sag Sprints, where our men took gold in the open and novice four, was cancelled. Most of the Great Plains regatta in Topeka was rained out or postponed. To say this has been a frustrating season is quite an understatement.

The expectations for next season remain high. A series of rowers from the team plan on honing their skills over the summer with MRC, which will greatly improve general skill level. The Men's team will return at least 8 rowers next fall, for the first time in years. The Women's team will also have
some rowers at MRC this summer, recruit many novices, and see more success in the fall.  With a strong recruiting class, next season should be one where Mac Crew not only competes at Regattas, but has the ability and size for intra-squad competition.
