Issue Area Coordinator Positions
2008/2008

In addition to the duties listed below, all issue area coordinators share the same basic job responsibilities.

Alternative Breaks & Transportation Coordinator
The Alternative Breaks and Transportation Coordinator will drive students participating in weekly commitments a minimum of two times a week. The Coordinator will work with CEC staff and Issue Area Coordinators on scheduling and coordinating transportation for LOC, LIS, and/or academic classes. The Coordinator will also plan 1-2 Urban Plunges each semester, as well as alternative break trips (ie. January Katrina Relief Trip and/or Spring Break Trip). This position requires van certification. Hours for this position will be flexible but late afternoon and evening hours will be likely. 

Economic Justice Coordinator
The Economic Justice Coordinator will develop community partnerships and volunteer opportunities around issues of poverty, food, housing, and neighborhood development. Nonprofits working in these areas include: Project for Pride in Living, Second Harvest Food Bank, Simpson Housing Services, The Family Place a day shelter, and Habitat for Humanity. The Coordinator is responsible for planning programs during Hunger and Homelessness week, occurring the week before Thanksgiving.

Public Policy Coordinator
The Public Policy Coordinator promotes and coordinates opportunities in areas of public policy, citizenship, and voting issues. The Coordinator will identify community resources and organizations engaging politics and public policy. Responsibilities also include collaborating with other issue area coordinators to infuse policy issues into their programming and educational events (esp. Hunger and Homelessness Week, World AIDS Day, Women’s History Month, Earth Week, and Literacy Awareness) as well as maintaining relationships with campus organizations such as Mac Dems, Mac Greens, and Mac Republicans. The Coordinator will also plan trainings, educational opportunities, and in-services/reflection sessions on current local and national policy issues and on strategies to engage public policy issues.

Youth and Tutoring Issue Area Coordinator
The Youth and Tutoring Coordinator will develop and maintain partnerships with a number of schools and children’s programs. The Coordinator will also plan monthly trainings in literacy, education, and children’s issues, and recruit and support Macalester volunteers at our partner sites. Major programming includes National Literacy Awareness Week in early March.
