ACES (Athletes Committed to Educating Students)
The Team Leader will assume leadership for one student team at A.C.E.S., an after-school tutoring/mentoring program for inner-city youth. Each team will consist or approximately 10 - 20 students. The Team Leader will take an active role in improving the academic progress of inner-city students by facilitating educational activities focused on reading, writing, math, art, science and physical education. They would work during after-school program hours (roughly 2:30pm - 6pm).
Casa de Esperanza has multiple openings
Children's Volunteer Coordinator will plan and coordinate regular activities for children in the Refugio. These may include field trips, educational activities, and assisting with the Dog Therapy group. Student will also assist Children’s Specialist with developing program materials.
The duties of the Family Advocacy Assistant position depends on skills and interests of student. May include working with women and/or children, answering crisis calls, assisting with legal matters including attending court proceedings and occasional light administrative duties.
The Center for Victims of Torture
The New Tactics in Human Rights project offers a unique experience for a student assistant to work on an international human rights project that promotes collaboration among human rights practitioners around the world. This position presents an opportunity to not only work with a project that promotes collaboration among the global human rights community, but be a part of this community themselves.
A student assistant will have the opportunity to assist and learn from the New Tactics staff in many areas of work. Over the past several years, the New Tactics project has compiled an extensive collection of human rights tactics used around the world to advance human rights. The project shares this information with advocates around the world through the dissemination of materials, on-line discussions, and the implementation of training workshops. The student will play an important role in researching tactics being used to prevent and resolve human rights abuses in order to promote human rights cultures. The student will assist staff in carrying out a variety of tasks, such as: researching innovative human rights organizations, assist in the development of a monthly eNewsletter, blog posts, on-line tactical discussions, developing training materials, writing case studies, supporting the management of the database and website, and assisting in the organization of meetings and workshops. The New Tactics project is in the process of strengthening our online community of human rights practitioners. The student will be able to become part of the New Tactics international community and help foster its growth through online discussions and website development. Additionally, there are a number of opportunities to translate New Tactics online material into many languages.
Division of Indian Work
The Youth Worker is responsible for assisting with supervision and programming for all group activities, including tutoring and homework help, recreation, crafts and cultural classes.
Dodge Nature Center has multiple openings
The farm assistant will gain relevant experience with field crops, animal care, teaching, and gardening while developing a deeper understanding of sustainable agriculture practices.
The preschool assistant will gain relevant, hands-on experience in a nature-based preschool by assisting in the planning and presentation of a variety of activities.
The restoration assistant will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of land management, from plant identification to planning to maintenance.
English Learning Center
The bulk of the Computer Lab Tutor/Student Support Assistant position involves managing our open computer lab and working with staff to develop a workbook of basic computer skills. They will also have the opportunity to plan and implement simple computer lessons in a classroom format and work with computer volunteers. Most of our learners have little to no background in using computers so lessons would include things like typing, using a mouse, formatting a word document, and navigating the internet. The rest of the position includes assisting staff in general student support duties such as registering new students, administering tests, and other general office duties. We are a small staff and duties tend to overlap greatly.
Eureka Recycling
The Zero Waste Event Student Worker will help provide logistical support at community events and aid in increases the efficiency of zero waste event services. For six years, Eureka Recycling has coordinated zero-waste events in the Twin Cities, including the Living Green Expo, Saint Paul Bike Classic and the Northland Bioneers Conference. This student will assist with event coordination, and during the event will provide support for setup, and monitoring. The student will also be a key on-campus connection between Macalester College and Eureka Recycling. The student will assist in research and compiling of waste and recycling data. The student may assist in implementing changes in Macalester’s recycling structure and measuring the results, sorting through Macalester’s waste, interviewing key people, attending events, attending all zero-waste committee meetings, and researching current campus practices that are relevant to the zero-waste goals.
EXPO Elelmentary School
The Student Mentor/Tutor will tutor/mentor to elementary grade students (1-6) mainly in the areas of literacy or math. Possible activities include one on one tutoring in reading and math, lead small reading groups, listen to students practice reading, help students with the writing process, assist teachers with classroom lessons (instructions always provided by educator) attend field trips (if interested) and become an integral part of the classroom through a consistent, ongoing relationship.
The Family Place
The children's activity staff promotes the learning of important life skills through a wide variety of fun activities. These activities can include reading to young children and participating with them in craft activities. The staff person may encourage and assist older children with the completion of school work assignments by acting as a role model/mentor. The activity staff may also be called upon to particiapate in off-site field trips that are intended to promote both learning and fun. The focus of The Family Place enrichment program is that learning can indeed be fun. Staff are encouraged to develop their own creative tasks for the children that meet these objectives.
Family Tree Clinic
Family Tree Clinic is a non-profit reproductive health clinic in St. Paul. Patient Educators are responsible for providing non-directive information, counseling and referrals to patients at Family Tree Clinic.
Friends of the Mississippi River
The Outreach and Policy Assistant will help convert educational and recreation-oriented volunteers into river advocates and activists.
Get Ready Program
Get Ready tutors provide academic assistance to 4th - 9th graders in Minneapolis and St. Paul Schools. They tutor, mentor and serve as higher education role models while gaining meaningful work experience relevant to their educational goals.
Green Institute
The Metro CERTs program assistant will assist the Metro CERTs Network coordinator to work with communities that are working on a local community energy project or discussing their options for such a project. In addition, the position will likely include helping to staff the advisory committee and/or a subcommittee, assisting with communications, and staffing events. The purpose of the Network is to provide support and resources to community- based energy projects.
Hiawatha Leadership Academy Charter School
The kindergarten, first, and second grades have a study buddy position. The HLA goal is to begin the pathway to college and lifelong achievement starting on day one in Kindergarten. In order to do that, we need to make college "real" for our students and their families. When our students build relationships with students from Macalester - they can truly imagine themselves going to college when they are "big."
Our scholars will benefit enormously by getting to know YOU. The great majority of our students will be the first people in their family to attend college … YOU will be their role models. You can help them realize the importance of trying their best, even when things are hard to do. You can help them finish up their "life's work" (our term for homework). You can help them read, and read, and read more to the point that reading becomes easy, natural, and enjoyable - not a task.
Most of all, you will be able to give our HLA kindergarteners, first, and second graders the individual attention they want so much.
Ronald M. Hubbs Center for Lifelong Learning
ELL Tutor/Classroom Assistant tutors adult immigrants and refugees in basic English reading, writing and math skills in both a classroom (assisting a teacher) and tutor lab setting.

The Spanish Circle worker will first of all be a member of the Spanish Circle on Monday and Wednesday evenings. In addition, the worker will work on projects developed with her or his supervisor that contribute to the success of JAS.

Jean Lyle Children's Center
The Teacher Assistant will assist teachers working with children (ages 3-6) individually and in small groups at learning centers and with art activities, stories, playing games, etc. Also helping to set up snack, cleaning up materials and after class, prepping materials for classroom projects
Juxtaposition Arts, Inc
The Studio Arts Program Assistant will assist with programmatic duties of the Studio Arts Program, Juxtaposition's in-house, after school arts program. Such duties include recording student attendance in programs, assisting with set up and clean-up, taking photographs of programs, assisting with student recruitment, planning the end-of-program events, and assisting the lead instructor with all other programmatic duties.
Land Stewardship Project has multiple openings
The goal of the Community Based Food Systems and Economic Development program is to expand sustainable farming systems, making significant long-term environmental improvements, and delivering community and economic benefits. The Community Organizing Assistant will assit with outreach, meeting preparation and background research to help build a Buy Fresh Buy Local campain in the St. Croix Valley.
“Keeping the land and people together” is phrase the Land Stewardship Project uses to describe our work to advance stewardship on the land, shape public policy and institutional practices towards environmental and economic justice, and build local food systems that provide safe, nutritious food and community-based renewable energy from biomass. The Community Organizing Assistant for Policy and Organizing Program position will work with policy staff the LSP's Executive Director to conduct background research and help implement a project to utilize perennial prairie grown by area farmers to reduce the carbon footprint of an environmental learning center.
Linwood A+ Elementary
The Tutor and Classroom Assistant will provide direct service at Linwood A+ Elementary School through various activities including tutoring, assisting in the classroom, and being a reading buddy.
Minnesota Children’s Museum
The Early Childhood Program Facilitator is responsible for facilitating a wide variety of high-quality drop-in based programming throughout Minnesota Children's Museum. The student will be involved in facilitating Exploration Station, an arts and/or sensory program; Inventor's Workshop, in which children and adults work together to build and create something new out of recycled/reuse items; and Gallery Programs, which help to extend Gallery messages through fun and interactive activites.
Minnesota Historical Society (Minnesota History Center)
The Museum Educator student worker will join a corps of professional, energetic museum educators dedicated to connecting young people with Minnesota’s diverse history; to building critical thinking skills through historical research and analysis; and to promoting lifelong learning. The Minnesota History Center offers a variety of innovative programs serving the K-12 field trip audience. Approximately 65,000 students from throughout the state participate in the History Center’s museum education programs annually. Participants in the Off-Campus Student Employment program will work with other museum educators to orient and welcome these student groups; to conduct hands-on museum lessons and other educational programs for students of diverse backgrounds and abilities; and to assist in the daily operations of the History Center’s school programs unit.
Minnesota Internship Center School
The ESL Classroom Tutor will work under the direction of the classroom teacher. They will work with students one to one or in small groups. The students are all immigrants, mostly from Somalia and smaller numbers from Ethiopia and Mexico, ages 15-20. Teachers request tutors to help in their classes. This includes: reading, writing, math science, computer and social studies classes. Work study students also assist students in our After School Homework Center on a variety of subjects. It is also possible to help with after school activities such as Knitting or Math Club. Work Study students are highly valued at MNIC.
Multicultural Resource Center, Saint Paul Public Schools
Calling creative individuals committed to achieving social justice through education! The Multicultural Resource Center is in need of a Multicultural Resource Center Outreach Assistant or two to assist in facillitatiing access to the amazing resources we have in our collection. This outreach can come in many forms: work on our website, developing curriculum that incorporates the objects around social justice themes, researching and documenting objects in the collection either through traditional means or through collecting oral histories, developing and conducting staff trainings, classroom presentations and much more. The position could focus on one or more of these areas. We would like to shape the opportunities to the interests and skills of the student(s).
Supplemental training and learning opportunities would reflect the needs of the student. Possible training opportunities could include technology training, MN Youth Work Institute workshops, Urban Leadership Academy (U of M) workshops, or other learning opportunities related to social justice education issues. The OCSE worker would have their own workspace and computer (Mac) to work on.
Patrick's Cabaret
The student assistant will assist in the general operations of Patrick's Cabaret. They will also be working directly with the audiences and performers during cabaret performances.
Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota
Patient Support Assistant will play an important role in ensuring excellent patient care at the Highland Park clinic, a facility that provides abortion services in addition to a range of other reproductive health care services.
Project for Pride in Living, Inc. (PPL) has multiple openings
Homework Hangout and Family Activity Coordinator coordinates weekly Homework Hangout and family activity sessions for low-income affordable housing units in Saint Paul with a high percentage of families of East-African decent.
As a Mentor/Tutor at Homework 'n Hoops, you are paired with 2nd-6th youth in a supervised, structured setting. During the one-hour study period the student and her/his mentor/tutor set study goals, work together to complete any homework she/he brought, and engage in skill-building activities such as reading, language games, math games or learning packets. At the end of the study period they engage in recreational activities. They can choose activities like ping-pong, carpet ball, skittles, soccer, basketball, kick ball, etc. As they meet one-on-one each week the young person and her/his mentor/tutor build a relationship that supports productivity and achievement. Progressive Technology Project
The student Community Organizing & Technology Resource Developer will gain exposure and knowledge of some of our current programs including:Community Organizing and Technology Institute (COaTI), Basic Voter Data Skills, Power on Network - a network made up of organizers from around the country coming together through a variety of means to share information and resources on how to make technology serve the needs of organizing, TechCamp - Training on Basic Technology Skills for Organizers, Grants Program.
Simpson Housing Services
The Men’s Shelter Assistant will work with the Men's Shelter team to provide for the efficient operation of the shelter. This would include welcoming guests as they enter the shelter, answering their questions, connecting them to resources, completing intakes with new guests, and working with 2-4 assigned guests in depth (assessing their barriers to housing and identifying options for housing).
Wellstone Action--Campus Camp Wellstone program
The Project Coordinator with Campus Camp Wellstone will be responsible for helping plan and carry out up to 15 nonpartisan Electoral Action Trainings for students across the country. They will also help develop the training program for 2009--including curriculum revision, trainer selection and outreach to new campuses (specifically tribal colleges and Historically Black Colleges and Universities).
West 7th Community Center has multiple openings
The After School Program Assistant and Tutor student worker will help plan and implement the Community Kids After School Program. The Community Kids After School program provides five days a week of quality after school programming to 60 children in grades K-8. Staff and volunteer tutors facilitate social interactions, provide daily homework help, enrichment and athletic activities. Work-study hours will be spent working with children in the after school program and assisting Youth and Family workers with program planning.
Community Outreach Program Assistant student worker(s) are pivotal team member(s) providing direct service to individuals and families; engaging them in meeting health, employment, housing, immigration & family law and family stability goals thereby enriching and building healthy communities.
West Side Citizens Organization (WSCO)
The West Side 100 Community Connector will focus on connecting west side youth to the nonpartisan voter engagement work of WSCO, specifically with the West Side 100 committee. This person will have opportunities to facilitate collaboration between neighborhood organizations and neighborhood youth and to help identify and mobilize youth leadership.
Youth Farm and Market Project
The Youthworker and Farm student employee will work on two projects: assisting with youth classes and other programming revolving around healthy food systems education, and farm management, which includes working on our urban farms and coordinating volunteer work on urban farms.
YouthCARE (Youth for Cultural Appreciation and Racial Equality) has multiple openings
Program Assistant in the Young Women’s Mentoring Program assists the Program Director and two Program Leaders in planning, organizing and implementing the Young Women's Mentoring Program in the Little Earth, Glendale, and McDonough communities. Also responsible for supervising the Youth Mentors (14-18 years old) and girls (7-13 years old) who participate in weekly social, recreational and educational activities. Program Assistants’ responsibilities also include being a coach, teacher, mentor, and role model.
The Program Assistant in the YouthLEAD program will assist the program director with planning and leading recreational and leadership development activities for youth from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds ages 13 -18. Responsibilities will include co-organizing and implementing monthly social and recreational events, help coordinate youth leadership opportunities, conduct outreach activities with an individual or a small group of youth, and help maintain data and records for the program.
