What's New?

Welcome!

Preparing students for engaged citizenship and effective civic leadership is a critical part of Macalester's mission. Many Macalester faculty and staff are actively involved in public scholarship, civic learning and public work. Our students are passionate about issues and want to be positive change agents in the world. The "esprit de corps" of the campus is engagement -- of ideas and action towards a more just and responsible world. This is evidenced in part by the fact that 80% of our students participate in some form of community-based work before they graduate. We work in partnership with community organizations to provide learning experiences that will also enrich the community. This web site or our staff can provide you with information on the numerous ways to connect with the dynamic urban environment of the Twin Cities and beyond.

 100 Projects for Peace
Macalester students are invited to spend the summer of 2009 implementing a self-designed, grassroots project for peace. "Projects for Peace" prize recipients will receive $10,000 to implement their project.

"100 Projects for Peace" is meant to encourage creative ideas and entrepreneurial actions for building peacein the 21st century. Projects can be done anywhere in the world or locally. Students can apply as an individual or as a group. Students are strongly encouraged to contact Karin Trail-Johnson to discuss their project idea.

Proposals are due by midnight, January 20, 2009. Click here for more information>>>

Have some spare time
during J-Term?
Looking for something to do
in the Twin Cities?

Many local nonprofits struggle during J-Term because their student volunteers are not available. If you have ever wanted to volunteer in the community, but were too busy, now is your time to get involved.

During the Fall 2008 semester, did you participate in service for a class?  Did you volunteer at a one-time event – with a group or by yourself? Were you involved in an ongoing/weekly volunteer activity?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, please enter your information using this online form.

Each semester the CEC surveys students regarding their community involvement.

Why is this important?

  • to support the programming opportunities available through our office
  • for planning purposes
  • to keep track of student’s individual community involvement (The CEC can use this information for recommendations.)
  • to identify and strengthen community partnerships with local organizations

Please take a few minutes to complete the form.
By submitting this information, your name will be entered in a drawing for great Macalester gear from the Highlander!
