Macalester College
New Orleans Alternative Break
March 14-21, 2009

Who?
YOU!! Any Macalester student is welcome to join the trip.  This trip is the result of high student interest in learning more about effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans. Staff and students from Campus Programs and the Civic Engagement Center have shaped the following plan based on what we have learned from various relief organizations and our previous experience leading these trips.

What?
We will be doing disaster relief work with a number of community-based organizations in the New Orleans area.

Some of the group will have specific assignments closer to the date of the trip. The rebuilding work will be labor intensive. Please be mindful that you may be working in adverse conditions with respect to climate and terrain. For more information on the organizations' work in the area, please visit: www.reliefspark.org.

 Where?
The group will be staying in a four bedroom, four bathroom volunteer home with a kitchen in New Orleans operated by Relief Spark. It will be cozy!

How?
Our group of 28 staff and students will travel together by plane, departing on Saturday, March 14 and returning on Saturday, March 21, during Macalester College’s spring break.

We will meet together three times before the trip and once after the trip to:

  • Learn about the context of the work and the communities we will be assisting
  • Gain greater understanding of the disaster and rebuilding process in a broad sense
  • Reflect in-depth on the trip upon return

Because so much critical information and reflection will take place in these groups, participation in pre-trip and post-trip small group meetings is required for everyone.

Cost? Fundraising?
We estimate the total cost per person to be $450-$500 which will include transportation, lodging, and food for the entire trip.  The remaining portion of the trip cost will be subsidized by money raised through ground fundraisers.
