Macalester College
Hurricane Relief Trip
March 16-23, 2008

Who?
YOU!! Any Macalester student is welcome to join the trip.  This trip is the result of high student interest in hurricane relief work.  Staff and students from Campus Programs and the Civic Engagement Center have shaped the following plan based on what we have learned from various relief organizations and our past experiences leading these trips.

What?
We will be doing disaster relief work facilitated by Lean on Me, Inc. The vision of Lean On Me, Inc. set by their founders Shaun & Katrina Golden is very simple, "Helping Families, Helping America."

From their website:
Lean On Me, Inc. has been playing a instrumental role in the efforts to support the survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. From the floors of the Houston Astrodome, Reliant Center, to small hotels and motels on the highways and biways, LOMI was there. By phone, by volunteer, or by the internet, we were able to successfully place hurricane survivors in over 40 open homes offered by loving fellow Americans. We continue to support our families in the Gulf region, and plan on being there for the long haul!! Our Rebuilding "The Big Easy" Project is focused on getting the citizens of New Orleans and surrounding areas out of the FEMA trailers and temporary housing, and back into their homes.

The rebuilding work will be labor intensive. Please be mindful that you may be working in adverse conditions with respect to climate and terrain. For more information on the organization’s work in the area, please visit: http://www.help4families.org/. We will have specific assignments closer to the date of the trip.

Where?
The exact location of the site is still to be determined. We will be working in New Orleans in either the Lower 9th Ward or St. Bernard Parrish.  The group will be staying in a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom volunteer home with a kitchen in New Orleans operated by Lean On Me. It will be cozy!

How?
Our group of 13 staff and students will travel together by plane, departing on Sunday, March 16 and returning on Sunday, March 23 during Macalester College’s spring break.

We will meet together twice before the trip and once after the trip to:

  1. Learn about the context of the work and the communities we will be assisting
  2. Gain greater understanding of the disaster and rebuilding process in a broad sense
  3. Reflect in-depth on the trip upon return

Because so much critical information and reflection will take place in these groups, participation in pre-trip and post-trip small group meetings is required for everyone.

Cost? Fundraising?
We estimate the total cost per person to be $400 - $450 which will include transportation, lodging, and food for the entire trip.  The remaining portion of your trip cost will be subsidized by money raised at Springfest 2007.

We anticipate that participants will be able to fundraise some of this portion, and we have fundraising ideas for individuals and groups.
