Habitat for
Humanity Trip- Spring, 2006
The
Mac Habitat for Humanity Spring Break trip took 15 students down to the
sunny, warm land outside Austin, Texas. We left early Saturday, March
11, and returned late afternoon on Sunday the 19th. We had an
incredible week, making great new friendships and venturing a bit
outside our normal comfort zones!
After driving almost 20 hours, we arrived Sunday night
in Round Rock, TX, at St. Philip's United Methodist Church. Our Habitat
coordinators for Round Rock met us at the church with hugs, t-shirts,
and great excited energy! We started work on a house early Monday
morning, decking the roof, and beginning siding. Tuesday was another
very sunny day, and we finishing roof decking and layed the tar paper.
A siding crew tackled siding the house, a couple of us worked on
framing out a new window, and another crew finished the construction of
a water heater closet. We got to meet the homeowner that afternoon, and
she was full of smiles to see all the work we had managed to complete!
On Wednesday, we traveled out to a different site, at a
limestone rock quarry in Georgetown, TX, where some of us painted and
hung doors, while the rest of us deconstructed a massive porch,
removing all the nails and saving as much of the treated lumber as
possible. After completing work at this site, we got a complete tour of
a limestone quarry! We returned to our Round Rock site on Thursday to
finish siding, and tackle soffitting as well!
With no work left for us to do at either site Friday, we
ventured into Austin and explored the city. The St. Philip's Church
congregation welcomed us into their midst with very open arms, inviting
us into their homes for dinners and games; we experienced first hand
some amazing Texas hospitality! We even got to take in a full rodeo and
country concert while in Texas!!
