Area Coordinators
Arts for Social
Change Coordinator
The
Arts for Social
Change Coordinator will partner with local nonprofits that are
integrating arts
(music, visual art, performance art, etc.) into efforts for social
justice and
personal expression. The Twin Cities
have many nonprofits that engage arts issues, including the Cedar Cultural Center,
Intermedia Arts,
Heart of the Beast Mask and Puppet Theatre, and Patrick’s Cabaret. The Coordinator will also work with the other
Issue Area Coordinator to include arts in their programming and educate
campus
about the transformative power of art through such activities as mural
projects
and neighborhood public arts tours.
College Access
Issue Area Coordinator
Opportunities
Abound promotes the enrollment of promising Minnesota low-income
students, many of whom are students of color, into Minnesota colleges
and universities. This position will support the Opportunities Abound
program by recruiting potential volunteers for Opportunities Abound
student leadership group and participating in
Opportunities Abound planning committee. The coordinator
will plan regular collaborative
trainings and reflection sessions, help coordinate campus visits and
youth events on campus, and support the access-related
projects with area schools.
Economic
Justice Coordinator
The Economic
Justice
Coordinator will help develop community partnerships and volunteer
opportunities around issues of poverty, food, housing, and neighborhood
development. Among the nonprofits within
the Economic Justice Issue Area are Second Harvest Food Bank, Simpson
Housing
Services, Project for Pride in Living, and Keystone Community
Center. The
economic justice coordinator is
responsible for planning programs during Hunger and Homelessness week,
occurring the week before Thanksgiving.
Environmental
Issues
Do you want to create
positive change around environmental issues on campus and in the
community? The Environmental Issues Area
Coordinator will promote campus engagement at sites that work on issues
relation to the environment or animals, such as Dodge Nature
Center,
the Humane
Society of Ramsey County, and Macalester’s Ordway Field Station. The Coordinator helps plan Earth Week
(Mid-April) and organize campus forums and speakers.
Women and
Gender Issues
Coordinator
The
Coordinator of Gender Issues will develop
campus-community partnerships with women’s, men’s, and
GLBTI
organizations. The
Coordinator will also help plan events for Women’s History Month
and
will
collaborate on programming with campus organizations such as Feminists
in
Action and Queer Union. Major programming on campus occurs during
Women’s
History Month in March.
Global
Peace and Justice Coordinator
The
Coordinator will build partnerships with organizations
focused on peace and justice, such as Resource
Center of the Americas,
Friends for a Nonviolent World, Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights,
and
Center for Victims of Torture. The
Coordinator will also plan educational events for campus around these
issues.
Importantly, this coordinator will serve as a liaison with the International Center to create a resource for
overseas
volunteer opportunities.
Health
Issue Coordinator
The
Coordinator will support service efforts around health
care, AIDS, Senior Citizens, mental health, and disabilities. This
coordinator
may work closely with Open Arms Food Delivery, MN AIDS Project, Camp Heartland,
and the Adopt-a-Grandparent program. The coordinator will also plan
events
around World AIDS Day and will work with Winton Health Services around
the Blood Drive
and
Campus Health Programming. Major campus planning occurs for Mental
Health
Awareness Week in Oct, and for World AIDS week, usually the first week
of
December.
Immigrant and
Refugee Resources
Coordinator
The Coordinator will
help build partnerships with nonprofits that are working with diverse
immigrant
and refugee communities in the Twin Cities, including MN Internship
Charter
School, Guadalupe Alternative Program, the Minnesota Literacy Council,
and the Jane
Addams School for
Democracy. This person will also
organize trainings and information sessions on such topics as literacy
issues
and the experiences of immigrants and refugees in the Twin Cities.
International
Speakers Program
Help
bring international cultures to the Twin Cities! The
Coordinator will recruit and train international students and students
with
international experiences to share international cultures with local
schools,
youth programs, and community centers. The
person will help plan International Kids Fest in
the late
fall and promote opportunities that utilize foreign languages
throughout the year.
Neighborhood
and GIS Mapping Coordinator
Create GIS maps to support curricular and
co-curricular civic engagement efforts at Macalester.
Organize and maintain neighborhood data files
on the web, in The Civic Engagement Center’s computer files, and
in
the office’s
file cabinet. Locate appropriate maps, articles, images,
and other resources to enhance the
understanding of Macalester’s local environment.
Public
Policy Coordinator
The
Coordinator will connect with other issue area
coordinators to educate Macalester students on important public policy
topics
related to all issue areas. This will include partnering with all issue
areas
during special education weeks to educate about policy issues. They
will also
build partnerships with nonpartisan organizations, such as the League
of Women
Voters, the Children’s Defense Fund, or the Minnesota Council of
Nonprofits.
The public policy coordinator may also educate the campus on various
ways to
engage in public policy decision-making.
Tutoring and
Children Issue Area
Coordinator
The
tutoring and
children coordinator will develop and maintain partnerships with a
number of
schools and children’s programs. The coordinator will also plan
monthly
trainings in literacy, education, and children’s issues, and
recruit
and
support Macalester volunteers at our partner sites. Major programming
includes
National Tutoring Week in early Nov. and National Literacy Awareness
Week in
early March.
Administrative
Positions
Marketing Coordinator
Apply
your skills in
web design and publicity to Macalester’s service
efforts—and build your
portfolio in the process! The Marketing
Coordinator will develop the Civic Engagement Center’s webpage,
design
publicity pieces, and think creatively about new ways to communicate
the CEC’s
mission and programs. The Coordinator
should know how to use software programs used in publicity and
webdesign, such
as DreamWeaver, In Design or PageMaker, and Publisher.
Office
Assistants (2)
Want
to support all
issues? The Office Assistants will help with general office work,
including
entering data on service hours and timesheets, organizing and
maintaining
office communications, and assisting with other logistical preparation
to
provide support for all issue areas and staff.
Lives
of Commitment Coordinator
This Coordinator
will
assist in planning Lives of Commitment retreats and student leader
meetings. Help coordinate student
involvement at their weekly volunteer sites and help plan community
site
visits. Research neighborhood resources and articles and books to
integrate into
programming.
