Student-Faculty Summer Research Collaboration Guidelines
Grant awards in the past have ranged from $3,000 to $5,500.
Expenses may include:
- student summer stipends ($350/week for 4-10 weeks + 10% F.I.C.A)
- faculty summer stipend (maximum of $200/week + 10% F.I.C.A.
or supplement to Faculty Travel and Research Allowance) (please
specify which)
- student travel connected with research (faculty travel expenses
could be applied for from the Wallace Travel Grant program if
eligible)
- equipment, materials, software • other research related
expenses, assay fees, etc.
Student stipends will be payable bi-weekly as per College
policy for summer employment. Faculty stipends or FTR supplements
will be payable in two installments:
- half at the beginning of the grant period
- half upon presentation of research product and final report
Criteria for Student-Faculty Summer Research Collaboration
Grants:
- projects which are truly collaborative in nature will be favored
quality of project
- feasibility of proposal and budget appropriateness
- projects with the potential for generating continuing work
after the ten-week period will be favored
- where proposals are equivalent in quality, consideration will
be given to the distribution of proposals across the disciplines
• order of faculty priority: tenured or tenure track,
adjunct professors, long-term part-time, full-time non-tenure-track
returning in the fall
- order of student priority: rising seniors, rising juniors,
others
The endowment supporting these grants requires that a
limited number of grants be awarded in specific disciplines per
donor preferences:
- Keck -at least two grants in the math/natural sciences
- Bigelow -at least one grant for an action research collaboration
- Leonard -at least one grant in chemistry or another physical
science
- Lanegran -one grant in any discipline
- Allianz -one grant in economics or mathematics
- Class of 1950 -one grant in any discipline
- Macknight-Ludwig -one grant in chemistry or psychology
- Paul Anderson -one grant in the social sciences
- Harrison -one grant every two years
- Kraus-Anderson -one grant every two years
- Sielaff -one grant in environmental research every two years
Student-Faculty Summer Research applications must be filled
out by the professor in order to be considered for funding.
