Research Institute Readings

Faculty Seminar 2003-04

New critical scholarship on racialized sexuality is explaining racial and sexual power within the transnational dynamics of colonialism, diaspora, migration, and global capitalism. This research institute seeks to clarify an emergent field of study which is crossing academic boundaries and moving marginal topics to the center. The institute does so by asking how new work relates to legacies of feminist and queer anti-racisms, such as women of color feminism and queer of color organizing, including by inspiring new research and mobilizations today.

The institute features presenters whose first book or other major works are defining transnational studies of race and sexuality and engaging their links to feminist and queer anti-racisms. Presenters and participants will consider:

  • what is the current state of studies of race and sexuality in transnational perspective?

  • how does such work respond to legacies of women of color feminisms and queer of color projects, including their points of collision or collusion?

  • what are crucial directions for future scholarship and organizing around race and sexuality in transnational perspective?

This research institute welcomes scholars from Minnesota and across the U.S. who wish to engage new scholarship and create new relationships in support of their research and teaching. The institute seeks to maximize dialogue. Speakers are paired so as to engage synergies in their work. Respondents to each session will link papers while reflecting on their connections to their own research. Audience discussion in each session will be augmented by the institute’s conclusion in break-out discussion groups, where the topics of the sessions will be examined towards proposing directions for future work. We hope that the ideas brought to and generated by the institute will inspire participants to form new and rewarding conversations and collaborations.

Welcome to the institute!
