Wallace Travel and Research (WTR) Grants
Wallace Travel Grants
The Wallace endowment provides funds (approximately $40,000
per year) for travel associated with faculty scholarship and is
intended to support the following:
- short research trips abroad;
- travel to an international conference; and/or
- travel to collaborate with a distinguished colleague outside
the United States.
Recent WTR grants for travel have been in the range of $1,500 to
$3,000. The funds may only be used for the specific purpose described
in the original application. In recent years, Resources and Planning
Committee has not provided funding for conference attendance if
no paper is being presented or living expenses for sabbatical leaves.
Wallace Research Grants
The Wallace endowment also provides funds (approximately
$60,000 per year) for faculty scholarship and associated research
expenses. The WTR Grants for research are intended to support all
types of research and creative activity, particularly those associated
with sabbatical leaves. Recent WTR Grants for research have been
in the range of $3,500 to $6,000. Expenses may include:
- student research assistance (summers only; $3500 maximum +10%
FICA; $7.50/hour; $350/week full-time for 10 weeks
- Travel connected with research (for short research trips abroad,
see above)
- equipment, materials, software
- other research related expenses, assay fees, expendables,
etc.
In recent years, Resources and Planning Committee has not provided
funding for faculty stipends for tenured and tenure- track faculty,
conference attendance if no paper is being presented or living expenses
for sabbatical leaves.
Criteria for Wallace Travel and Research Grants:
- impact of proposed activity on your professional development
- priority level based on recent Wallace Grant award history
- evidence of productive use of previous support from grants
- order of priority; tenured or tenure track faculty; MSFEO
participants, Adjunct Professors, long-term part-time, full-time
non-tenure-track with at least one year remaining on contract.
Wallace Travel and Research Grant applications will be considered
twice each year; the fall application deadline will be the first
Monday in November and the spring deadline will be the last Monday
in February. Faculty eligible for Wallace Travel and Research Grants,
in priority order, are tenured and tenure-track faculty, MSFEO participants,
long-term part-time faculty (more than 3 years), and full-time non-tenure-track
faculty with at least one year remaining on their contract. Faculty
members who have not recently been awarded a WTR Grant will be given
higher priority. The Resources and Planning Committee awards these
grants on a competitive basis, as described in the faculty by-laws.
