Educator of the Year
Scott Morgensen, Assistant Professor in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies is this year's award recipient .
An educator is one who is trained in the art of teaching. It is also someone who is a specialist in the theory and practice of education. This year’s educator of the year was described by one student as someone who “brings seemingly boundless energy and acumen to the field of queer studies and to teaching at Macalester.” Another student said, “I know my leadership skills are heightened due to my interaction with him, and without him, I would not have found an academic passion.”
To list only a few of Professor Scott Morgensen’s accomplishments, he is an active faculty liaison with Macalester’s Queer Union. He’s played an integral role in the development of a public health concentration and moreover, has continually advocated for gender equality on campus, including the gender inclusive restrooms and accommodations. On top of this, he’s spent time in the political, social, and religious life of the Twin Cities LGBT communities, and by doing so, has made a name for Macalester’s Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. He is said to “mold his curriculum around the idea of activism”. His teaching, scholarship, and service embody this institution’s commitments to excellence in scholarship, internationalism, multiculturalism and service to society.
