Factoid
The number of glaciers in Glacier National Park has dropped from 150 in 1850 to fewer than 50 in 2000. All remaining glaciers could disappear completely as soon as 2050.
World Watch Institute

Geology Professor Kelly MacGregor is concerned about the North American Rockies—specifically how the glaciers there are changing in response to rising global temperatures and other variables. She is Co-Principal Investigator for two National Science Foundation research projects, one sited in Glacier National Park and the other near Golden, British Columbia. She and her students conduct primary research about these huge patches of packed snow and ice — and share what they learn with the larger scientific community.

Creating a sustainable world
Jennifer (Jo) Opdyke Wilhelm ’96, Aquatic Ecologist
Kevin Opdyke Wilhelm ’95, Sustainability Consultant

Where They Work
Kevin: Innovative Strategies

Jo: King County Dept. of Natural Resources and Parks – Land and Water Resources

Kevin ’95 and Jennifer (Jo) ’96 Opdyke Wilhelm have found their passion in making our world more sustainable—Jo as an ecologist monitoring the freshwater systems of Washington’s King County and Kevin as a sustainability consultant working with non-profits and corporations.

Serving as interim executive director for the Earth Preservation Fund, Kevin increased the number of projects the non-profit could support, targeting its resources to four countries. Under his leadership, the fund chose to financially support a Kenya-based non-profit working to incorporate solar powered cooking techniques to reduce the use of wood and deforestation around a local village.
