The Charles Green Endowed Fund for Civic Engagement
at Macalester College
In his forty-year teaching career at Macalester College, Professor
Charles Green has functioned as a one-man leadership academy
for many students, inspiring and guiding them to make the transition
from detached observer to engaged citizen. Through his teaching,
mentoring and example, Professor Green has instilled in his students
a sense of confidence and optimism about their ability to engage
proactively in the world.
As Professor Green approaches retirement, a group of alumni, colleagues
and friends is establishing an endowed fund named in his honor and
designed to carry on the essence of his work. The Charles Green
Endowed Fund for Civic Engagement will support activities designed
to enhance student learning, cultivate student leadership skills
and promote a life of active democratic social and civic engagement.
The endowment, administered by the Political Science Department
and serving students in all majors, will support three related activities:
Civic Engagement Fellowship Program
Student Scholarly Activities Fund
Support for Student-Initiated Co-Curricular Programs

More than one successful former student of Chuck Green tells
a story like this: We would talk about something we believed in and wed
say, This ought to happen. Chuck would say, Why
dont you just go and do it? He knew wed make a
few mistakes along the way, but he didnt give us warnings,
he gave us confidence.
