A World of Possibilities
The newest issue of Macalester Today talks about the ideas behind the IGC and gives a historical perspective. read it»

"When we hear the word global, we often jump to something that is far away," says Karin Trail-Johnson, associate dean of the IGC. "But we want students to understand that they are rooted somewhere. They have commitments to their community and to others."

A VISION FOR TOMORROW'S WORLD

The innovative programs housed within the IGC examine issues of pressing import and are designed to reflect and respond to the realities of a changing world. The IGC will prepare Macalester to engage some of the greatest questions of our time. By locating these crucial areas of programming in one centralized location, the IGC will facilitate unparalleled collaboration and interaction, in service to Macalester's distinctive spirit of civic and international engagement.

International Center
The International Center will continue to focus on preparing students to become global leaders.

Internship Program
This program (housed in Kagin Commons next door but part of the IGC) provides hundreds of opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience in fields of interest, both locally and across the U.S. and the world.

Civic Engagement Center
The CEC provides opportunities for students to engage and partner with the community in a variety of ways, including curricular and co-curricular programming and institutional relationships with local organizations. The CEC will also feature three unique civic leadership programs:

  • Leaders in Service, enabling students to serve as campus Issue Area or Program Coordinators
  • Off-Campus Student Employment Program in which students can earn their work-study award with a local organization
  • Lives of Commitment, a program for first-year students supported by the Lilly Project for Vocation and Ethical Leadership.

FUNDRAISING GOAL:
$7.5 MILLION

The IGC is being constructed without assuming debt, making it the first of its kind on campus. It will also be Macalester's first LEED building.

LEED is a building rating system devised by the U.S. Green Building Council that evaluates the sustainability and environmental impact of structures across the nation. The IGC will be one of the first higher education buildings in the nation to achieve Platinum LEED certification.
