Hailing from Alcala de Henares, Spain, Alvarez studied abroad in the Netherlands through a Macalester-designed program that examines globalizaation from multiple perspectives. He received funding from the Civic Engagement Center to develop a theater program for Latino youth in St. Paul that examined issues including immigration, identity and bilingulism.
