2006-2007: MACALESTER COLLEGE FUND RAISING YEAR IN REVIEW

June 1, 2006-May 31, 2007

Happiest are the people who give most happiness to others." - Dennis Diderot

The Macalester community must truly be a happy community as a record 11,637 donors made a gift to the College this year. For the second consecutive year the amount they contributed set a record of philanthropic support for the College.

Excluding bequests, donors contributed over $16 million for fiscal year 2007. This represents an 11% increase over the $14.5 million contributed in 2006. Alumni contributions also set a record, up almost $1 million over 2006 with $10.2 million contributed from alumni.

Contributions to the Macalester Annual Fund set a record, with $3,092,920 contributed. Leadership giving ($1000+) set a new record surging 19% to 601 donors (up from 445) with Grand Society ($1,000) memberships totaling 529, and charter memberships in Tartan ($5,000) at 37 and Highland ($10,000+) at 35. Classes with outstanding participation in the Annual Fund included 1951 with 61%, 1946 - 54%, 2002 & 1947 - 52%, and 1997 & 1943 - 51%. Disappointing news is that overall alumni participation dropped from 43% to 41%, reflecting a national trend of declining alumni participation rates.

The trend in support from current and former parents is especially encouraging. In 2007 this support equaled $923,576, nearly doubling the total of 2006 ($481,512). The number of current and former parent donors also increased dramatically from 1454 donors in 2006 to over 2000 donors in 2007.

Of the $16.5 million in total gifts received during the year, $6.3 million was directed to building projects and $5.1 million to the endowment.

The Class of 1957 celebrated their 50th anniversary during Reunion Weekend by presenting a class gift of $5,011,776 from donors representing 62% of the class—results that shatter all previous records for 50th reunion dollars raised as well as set the new record for participation.

The Class of 2007 directed their senior gift of $34,044 toward the planned renovation of Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center. A record 43% of the class made a contribution toward the senior gift.

Construction for the new Macalester Athletic and Recreation Center (MARC) is underway as fund raising continues in anticipation of a fall 2008 completion date. Gifts and pledges total $15.9 million for MARC.
